The S&P 500 was little changed in early trading on Friday, October 16, 2026, while the Nasdaq 100 fell more than 1%. Five U.S. financial companies reported results before the opening bell.
What happened
At 10:00 a.m. New York time, the S&P 500 stood at 7737.78. That is 6.28 points, or 0.08%, below the previous close of 7744.06. A move of that size leaves the index essentially flat.
The Nasdaq 100 showed a larger decline. It traded at 29627.59, down 308 points, or 1.03%, from a previous close of 29935.59. The gap between the two indexes means the weakness was concentrated in the segment the Nasdaq 100 tracks, while the broader benchmark held near its prior level.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which tracks expected swings in the S&P 500, stood at 15.95 at 14:00 UTC. The previous close was 16.46, so the gauge was down 0.51 points, or 3.10%.
Company moves before the bell
Several individual shares moved in premarket trading. Tesla shares climbed nearly 5% after the company unveiled its second-generation Roadster. The vehicle uses rocket-style thrusters developed by SpaceX, and the company showed aerial maneuvers at the event.
SpaceX shares rose more than 1% in premarket trading. CoreWeave fell 4% before the open. Travelers also appeared among the premarket movers, after its quarterly report.
These moves were recorded before the cash session began. They show how early trading can differ from the first hour of regular trading, when more participants take part and prices can adjust. The figures above describe premarket levels only.
Bank and insurer earnings
Travelers Companies reported earnings per share of 9.18 USD, against an estimate of 7.39 USD. Revenue came in at 12.41 billion USD, against an estimate of 11.36 billion USD.
Truist Financial reported earnings per share of 1.16 USD, against an estimate of 1.14 USD. Its revenue was 3.75 billion USD, against an estimate of 5.36 billion USD. The profit line and the revenue line therefore point in different directions for this bank.
M&T Bank posted earnings per share of 5.08 USD, against an estimate of 4.93 USD. Its revenue was 2.55 billion USD, against an estimate of 2.53 billion USD.
Citizens Financial Group reported earnings per share of 1.41 USD, against an estimate of 1.39 USD. Revenue was 2.32 billion USD, against an estimate of 2.34 billion USD.
Regions Financial reported earnings per share of 0.73 USD, against an estimate of 0.66 USD. Its revenue was 1.99 billion USD, the same as the estimate of 1.99 billion USD.
The index picture and volatility
The two equity benchmarks moved in different ways at 10:00 a.m. The S&P 500 was 0.08% lower, a change small enough to call flat. The Nasdaq 100 lost 1.03%, which equals 308 points from its previous close of 29935.59.
The volatility index moved lower. At 15.95, it was 0.51 points under its previous close of 16.46, a decline of 3.10%. A lower reading means that expected swings in the S&P 500 eased slightly from the prior session, even as the technology-heavy index declined.
Put side by side, the three readings give a mixed picture. The broad index was almost unchanged. The technology-heavy index was lower by a little over one percent. The gauge of expected volatility was lower by 3.10%. Each figure is a snapshot at its stated time, and none of them sets the course for the rest of the session.
Why it matters
Regional banks and insurers give a view of lending, deposits and underwriting across the U.S. economy. Their quarterly reports show how each business is earning money. Five reports on one morning put a large amount of that information into the market at once.
The results were mixed on the revenue line. Travelers reported revenue of 12.41 billion USD against an estimate of 11.36 billion USD, and M&T Bank reported 2.55 billion USD against 2.53 billion USD. Citizens reported 2.32 billion USD against 2.34 billion USD, and Truist reported 3.75 billion USD against 5.36 billion USD. Regions reported 1.99 billion USD, the same as its 1.99 billion USD estimate.
On earnings per share, Travelers reported 9.18 USD against 7.39 USD, and Regions reported 0.73 USD against 0.66 USD. M&T Bank reported 5.08 USD against 4.93 USD, Citizens 1.41 USD against 1.39 USD, and Truist 1.16 USD against 1.14 USD. Reading the quarter for the group as a whole therefore depends on which line a reader considers first.
The index picture is also split. The S&P 500 barely moved at 10:00 a.m., yet the Nasdaq 100 fell 1.03%. The premarket moves in Tesla, SpaceX and CoreWeave show that company-specific news drove part of the early session. Tesla's product event and the SpaceX link to the new Roadster drew attention, while CoreWeave moved the other way.
For readers who follow U.S. equities from other time zones, the New York morning is also the point at which Europe is already well into its trading day. Early moves in the Nasdaq 100 and in volatility can therefore shape the tone of the afternoon in London, though the pack records no cross-market data to confirm that.
What to watch next
The session runs until 4:00 p.m. New York time. One point to follow is whether the Nasdaq 100 narrows or widens its 1.03% decline from the previous close of 29935.59. Another is whether the S&P 500 stays near its prior close of 7744.06.
Other points to follow during the day include how Tesla shares trade after the premarket gain of nearly 5%, and how CoreWeave trades after its 4% premarket decline. Market participants will also look at how the shares of Travelers and the four banks respond once regular trading is under way.
The volatility index stands at 15.95, compared with a previous close of 16.46. Its level through the session will show whether expected swings in the S&P 500 keep easing. Further company reports will add detail on how the financial sector performed in the quarter.
The close at 4:00 p.m. New York time will give the first full measure of the day. Until then, the figures in this report are early readings taken at 10:00 a.m. New York time for the indexes and at 14:00 UTC for the volatility index.
