The S&P 500 closed at 7661.22 on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, down 82.84 points or 1.07% from the previous close of 7744.06. The Nasdaq 100 fell more sharply, ending at 29187.55, a decline of 748.05 points or 2.50%.
What happened
US equities finished the New York session lower. The S&P 500 was at 7661.22 at 15:59 New York time, against 7744.06 at the prior close. The Nasdaq 100 stood at 29187.55 at 16:00, compared with 29935.59 on Thursday.
The gap between the two benchmarks was wide. The Nasdaq 100 lost 2.50%, more than twice the 1.07% decline of the S&P 500. The Nasdaq 100 is built around large non-financial companies, many of them in technology, while the S&P 500 covers a broader mix of sectors.
In points, the S&P 500 gave up 82.84 and the Nasdaq 100 gave up 748.05. Both indexes therefore ended the week's final session well below their Thursday closes. The regular session in New York runs from 09:30 to 16:00 local time, and Friday was the last session of the trading week.
The two indexes moved in the same direction, but not by the same amount. That difference is the main feature of the session.
Bank and insurer earnings before the open
Several financial companies reported results before the market opened. The reports came from one insurer and four regional banks. They gave market participants a set of fresh figures from the financial sector on the same morning that equities later declined.
The Travelers Companies reported earnings per share of 9.18 USD, against an estimate of 7.39 USD. Its revenue was 12.41 billion USD, against an estimate of 11.36 billion USD.
Truist Financial posted earnings per share of 1.16 USD, against an estimate of 1.14 USD. Its revenue was 3.75 billion USD, against an estimate of 5.35 billion USD.
M&T Bank reported earnings per share of 5.08 USD, against an estimate of 4.93 USD. Revenue was 2.55 billion USD, against an estimate of 2.53 billion USD.
Citizens Financial Group reported earnings per share of 1.41 USD, against an estimate of 1.39 USD. Its revenue was 2.32 billion USD, against an estimate of 2.34 billion USD.
Regions Financial reported earnings per share of 0.73 USD, against an estimate of 0.66 USD. Its revenue was 1.99 billion USD, against an estimate of 1.99 billion USD.
Rates, the dollar and gold
The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.097% at 18:58 UTC, little changed from 5.088% at the previous close. The move was +0.9 basis points. A yield is the annual return on a bond. It moves opposite to the bond price.
The US Dollar Index stood at 101.5920 at 20:45 UTC, down 0.4630 points or 0.45% from 102.0550. The index measures the dollar against a basket of major currencies. A lower reading means the dollar was weaker against that basket on the day.
Gold futures stood at 4188.8 at 20:35 UTC, up 18.7 or 0.45% from 4170.1. Gold and the dollar moved in opposite directions during the session. Equities, the dollar and gold each showed a distinct move, while the Treasury market was the quiet part of the board.
Reading the session across assets
Taken together, the figures show four different pictures. Equities fell, with the Nasdaq 100 down 2.50% and the S&P 500 down 1.07%. The dollar index fell 0.45% to 101.5920. Gold futures rose 0.45% to 4188.8. The 10-year yield was almost unchanged at 5.097%.
The yield level matters as background. At 5.097%, it was only 0.9 basis points above the previous close of 5.088%. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. The bond market therefore did not move much while stocks declined.
The earnings data adds a separate layer. Four of the five companies listed reported earnings per share above their estimates, and the fifth, Regions Financial, also did so at 0.73 USD against 0.66 USD.
Why it matters
The Nasdaq 100 decline of 2.50% was the largest percentage move among the instruments in this report. It shows that the day's selling was concentrated in the index's large constituents rather than spread evenly across the market.
The 10-year yield at 5.097% remains a central reference for valuing company earnings and for borrowing costs across the economy. It was little changed on the day, so it did not add a new move to the equity decline.
The earnings reports from regional banks and an insurer give a view of financial-sector results. Earnings per share at all five companies were higher than the estimates listed above, for example 0.73 USD at Regions Financial against 0.66 USD. Revenue was mixed: Citizens Financial Group reported 2.32 billion USD against an estimate of 2.34 billion USD, while Truist reported 3.75 billion USD against an estimate of 5.35 billion USD.
The two moves were equal in size and opposite in direction. They sit alongside an equity session that ended lower across the two main US benchmarks.
What to watch next
The next trading session in New York will show how the Nasdaq 100 trades after closing at 29187.55. Market participants will also follow the 10-year yield, which stood at 5.097%, and the dollar index at 101.5920.
Further third-quarter earnings reports from US banks and insurers will add to the picture of the financial sector. Gold futures at 4188.8 and the dollar index will remain reference points for currency and commodity trading.
The S&P 500 starts its next session from 7661.22, compared with the 7744.06 level it held a day earlier. No further scheduled calendar events are listed for this report, so company reports and the moves in yields, the dollar and gold are the main items on the board.
