The big screen continues to deliver strong results for IMAX. The US company, specializing in premium cinema technologies and formats, closed the third quarter of 2026 with unprecedented results, confirming the growing importance of its business model within the entertainment industry. Between July and September, revenue reached $174.6 million, up 64% from the $106.7 million recorded in the same period of 2025. Gross margin climbed to $126.3 million, an increase of 88% year over year.

Operating profitability also accelerated significantly. Adjusted EBITDA reached $120.9 million, up 133% from $51.8 million a year earlier, while the corresponding margin stood at 69.3%, compared with 48.6% in the third quarter of 2025. Net income amounted to $117.1 million, compared with $22.6 million in the prior-year period. However, the result also benefited from a $36.7 million release of valuation allowances related to Canadian deferred tax assets, a one-off item that should be considered when assessing the company's performance.

The Odyssey Drives Global Box Office Growth

The main driver of growth was the commercial success of major releases presented in IMAX format. During the third quarter, global box office across the IMAX network reached a record $712 million, up 94% compared with the same period in 2025. This is particularly significant considering that the IMAX network accounts for less than 1% of the world's cinema screens while generating 6.7% of the industry's global box office during the quarter.

The standout title was Christopher Nolan's kolossal The Odyssey, which generated more than $538 million in IMAX box office revenue, becoming the highest-grossing IMAX release in the company's history. The film played a decisive role in the growth of the Content Solutions division, whose revenue increased 110% to $94 million.

The Technology Products and Services segment also delivered a positive performance, with revenue rising 28% to $77.3 million. The division benefited primarily from higher system rental and technology service revenues, alongside amendments and renewals of existing commercial agreements with exhibitors.

Global Network Expansion and New Growth Opportunities

IMAX's strategy continues to focus on international network expansion and partnerships with cinema operators. As of September 30, 2026, the company had a total of 1,887 installed systems worldwide, compared with 1,829 in the same period last year. Its backlog also included 409 systems, highlighting further opportunities for expansion.

On the financial front, cash generated from operating activities during the first nine months of the year reached $122 million, up 25% compared with 2025. Total available liquidity stood at $641 million, while total debt, excluding deferred financing costs, amounted to $251 million.

The outlook for the coming quarters will continue to depend on IMAX's ability to attract major film productions and strengthen demand for premium theatrical experiences. Among the most anticipated releases is Dune: Part Three, while the 2027 slate includes titles such as Avengers: Secret Wars, Star Wars: Starfighter and Man of Tomorrow.

The results further confirm IMAX's increasingly significant position within the global film industry. As streaming continues to reshape consumer habits, the company is betting on the strength of the theatrical experience and its ability to turn major cinematic events into a competitive and financial advantage.
