European equity markets were lower in late trading on Friday 6 November 2026. The STOXX Europe 600 stood at 647.48 at 17:14 CET, down 1.13% from 654.87 the previous session.

What happened

In Milan, the FTSE MIB was at 49971.42 at 17:14 CET, down 1.06% from 50505.87. The index was near the close of the Italian session, which runs until 17:30.

The DAX in Frankfurt was the weakest of the major benchmarks. It stood at 25793.5 at 17:31 CET, down 1.50% from 26187.3. In Paris, the CAC 40 was at 8139.37 at 17:31 CET, down 0.80% from 8205.37.

The IBEX 35 in Madrid was at 19335.4 at 17:16 CET, down 0.77% from 19486. Because the prices carry different times, the moves are not strictly simultaneous.

Why it matters

Data from the euro area added to the cautious tone. Retail sales for September rose 0.4% from a year earlier, against an estimate of 0.6%. The previous reading was 1.3%.

On a monthly basis, sales fell 0.7%, against an estimate of -0.1%. In the previous month they had risen 0.4%. Household spending is a key part of euro area growth, so the figures draw attention in capital cities and in Brussels, where governments are working on their budgets.

Other markets also moved lower. EUR/USD stood at 1.1148, down 0.62% from 1.1218. Brent crude was at 97.64, down 0.66% from 98.29. Gold futures were at 4070.5, down 1.05% from 4113.5.

Separately, gold demand in India picked up at the start of the Diwali festival on Friday. Prices had slid to a seven-month low, which drew back buyers who had waited for months for a correction. For investors, the session shows how weak consumer data and moves in currencies and commodities can shape sentiment across European markets at the same time.

What to watch next

The final levels of the European indices will be set after the auctions that end the session, so the final moves may differ from the late prices given here. Attention stays on further euro area data on consumption and activity, to see whether the September slowdown in retail sales continues.

Moves in the euro against the dollar and in Brent crude, both lower on the day, are also in focus for companies that depend on exports and energy costs. Gold is trading near the seven-month low cited in the Indian market.
