Manchester United swung to a first-quarter net loss as the club missed out on European competitions this season, hitting broadcasting revenue and ticket sales.
The Old Trafford club reported a net loss of £6.6 million ($8.83 million) for the quarter ending September 30, compared with a profit of £1.4 million a year ago. Total revenue fell 2%, while player and staff wages dropped 8.2% following job cuts.
“The difficult decisions we have made in the past year have resulted in a sustainably lower cost base and a more streamlined, effective organisation equipped to drive the club towards improved sporting and commercial performance over the long term,” CEO Omar Berrada said.
After six consecutive years of financial losses, Manchester United has implemented cost-saving measures, including job cuts, to stabilize finances. Minority owner Jim Ratcliffe, who holds around 29% of the club and oversees football operations, has also raised ticket prices, even as the club spent about £230 million in the summer transfer window and announced plans for a new £2 billion, 100,000-seat stadium.
The club’s absence from European competitions has dented broadcasting revenue and increased financial pressure, drawing criticism from supporters amid domestic struggles. Despite the setback, Manchester United retained its fiscal 2026 revenue forecast of £640–£660 million, with core profit expected between £180–£200 million.
