Real Madrid plans to demand more than €4 billion in compensation from UEFA after a Madrid court upheld a ruling that the governing body abused its dominant position by blocking the European Super League. The club argues it lost significant commercial and matchday revenue after the project collapsed in 2021.

Real Madrid said it will pursue “substantial damages” from UEFA after the Madrid Provincial Court rejected appeals by UEFA, LaLiga and the Spanish FA, confirming that UEFA’s actions to prevent the European Super League violated EU competition law. According to documents cited by the Financial Times, the club estimates it missed out on between €4.5 billion and €4.7 billion in potential revenue from broadcasting, sponsorship and ticketing.

The ruling follows the European Court of Justice’s decision in 2023, which found UEFA’s previous authorisation rules anti-competitive. Despite months of discussions, Real Madrid said no agreement was reached with UEFA regarding reforms to governance, financial sustainability and fan access. The club will now formally file a damages claim, while UEFA stated the verdict does not legitimise the abandoned Super League project and insisted its updated rules remain fully valid.
