Amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto reiterated the need for a coordinated response from the International community, emphasizing the role Italy intends to play in a multilateral framework.
According to the minister, the situation in the area, crucial for global energy balances, requires firmness and responsibility. The goal is to prevent the pressure exerted by Iran on freedom of navigation from becoming a dangerous precedent for international trade.
Crosetto highlighted that Rome is working to involve the United Nations, convinced that a shared and globally legitimized framework is essential to ensure security and stability. “We cannot give in to blackmail,” is the essence of the minister’s position, which aims for a unified and credible response.
The crisis in the Strait is part of a broader context of regional escalation, triggered after military actions by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets, actions interpreted by Washington as part of a strategy to contain threats to international security and regional stability.
In this context, the United States has reaffirmed its willingness to ensure the security of navigation, including through military protection of commercial routes, considered vital for the global economy and for the energy supply of many countries.
For Italy, a longstanding ally of the United States and a central player in the Mediterranean, the priority remains to combine dialogue and deterrence. On the one hand, diplomatic efforts are underway to promote de-escalation; on the other, the importance of an international presence capable of safeguarding freedom of maritime trade is acknowledged.
The position of the Italian government thus follows a balanced line: supporting allied actions to ensure security and stability, without renouncing the role of international institutions as the primary forum for crisis management.
In a context marked by strong tensions and global economic impacts, the strategy outlined by Crosetto aims to strengthen coordination among Western partners and multilateral bodies, with a view to a solution that safeguards both security and international law.
