In a move that reflects both firmness and determination to promote legality and accountability in Latin America, the U.S. administration is intensifying efforts to ensure that Venezuela aligns with international standards of transparency and respect for the rule of law.
According to informed sources, the U.S. Department of Justice is preparing a draft indictment against Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, as part of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities linked to the former state management of the oil sector.
Washington’s stated objective is not only to prosecute anyone guilty of economic crimes, but also to encourage a process of reforms that could lead Venezuela toward a more open and accountable future.
This strategy, which combines diplomatic incentives, political dialogue, and the use of established legal tools, comes after the coordinated U.S. action that removed former president Nicolás Maduro from office and brought him before the courts. The operation, carried out with precision by U.S. forces in January, was presented by the American government as a necessary step to combat corruption, drug trafficking, and human rights violations in Venezuela.
In its dialogue with Venezuelan authorities, the United States has also provided a list of officials associated with the former regime for whom cooperation from Caracas is requested, including arrest or detention in view of possible extraditions. Among them are individuals already implicated in legal proceedings in the United States, signaling Washington’s commitment to pursuing justice regardless of political affiliation.
The U.S. president has publicly praised Rodríguez for her cooperation on several fronts, emphasizing that a stable and law-abiding Venezuela is in the interest not only of Americans, but of the entire region. The American approach combines accountability with opportunity: those who support genuine reforms may benefit from a stronger bilateral relationship, including the prospect of investment and a more open trade relationship.
Although the Department of Justice has described some media reports as incomplete or misleading in statements posted on official social media accounts, Washington’s strategic message remains clear: the United States is prepared to support positive change in Venezuela, but it demands transparency, cooperation, and respect for the rule of law as prerequisites for a stable and prosperous future for the Venezuelan people.
