French soldiers recently arrived in Greenland to participate in the “Operation Arctic Endurance” exercise. In response to President Trump’s threats to seize Greenland, several NATO countries—including Germany, Sweden, France, and Norway—are sending small military contingents to the island to join joint exercises with Denmark. Denmark, which is responsible for Greenland’s defense, has warned that any U.S. attack could seriously undermine NATO and announced that it is strengthening its own military presence in coordination with allies.

Canada and France also plan to open consulates in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, in the coming weeks. While NATO countries routinely conduct Arctic training exercises, the current deployments carry symbolic weight, demonstrating European unity amid escalating tensions over Trump’s stated plans to act on Greenland “whether they like it or not.”

Germany, for example, is sending 13 soldiers to Greenland for an exploratory mission alongside other NATO partners, highlighting both routine military cooperation and a show of support for the island’s sovereignty.

The Danish foreign minister stated that, although discussions between American, Danish, and Greenlandic officials were “frank but constructive,” the “fundamental disagreement” over Greenland’s future remains unresolved.
