Germany announced on Wednesday that it will send its first soldiers to Greenland on Thursday, following similar moves by Sweden and Norway.

A government spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that over a dozen reconnaissance troops will be deployed. The deployment was first reported by the German newspaper Bild.

The decisions come amid heightened geopolitical tensions over Greenland, a strategically located and mineral-rich island. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly emphasized the island's importance to American security, suggesting that the United States must control it to prevent potential Russian or Chinese influence.

Trump has indicated that “all options are on the table” for securing Greenland, rhetoric that has further strained relations between the U.S. and European nations.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has attracted growing international attention in recent months due to its strategic position in the Arctic and its abundant natural resources.
