Is Switzerland going "Tax the Rich"?

The youth wing of Switzerland's socialists is proposing a 50% tax on inheritances, raising concerns on the the country remaining a hub for the wealthy if the referendum on the proposal has an affirmative result. The Swiss are projected to reject the proposal, with two thirds of the country's populace being against it in surveys on the matter, but even a 60-40 refusal concerns observers on the future of Switzerland's economy and culture.

The proposal coming in one of the biggest wealth hubs in the world shows a cultural shift sweeping across the West: social envy and general hatred for the rich. From the ever-growing influence of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's "Squad" and Bernie Sanders in the US, recently leading to Zohran Mamdani's election as Mayor of New York, to hit Asian media depicting rich people as blood-hungry monsters, like "Parasite" and "Squid Game", Western society is increasingly warming up to socialist ideas.

The rise of economic leftism in the West is dangerous because it puts into question the very foundation of what our systems stand for: individual and economic freedom going hand in hand and property rights being inviolable in order to ensure freedom and prosperity across the board. Even right wing governments and parties are not immune to this paradigm shift, with the Trump admin direcly entering major companies like Intel and with Trump even being called a socialist for it by California's Governor Gavin Newsom, and Italy's government being reprimanded by the EU on its abuse of regulatory power in banking.

The effects that Switzerland's referendum on inheritance tax is going to have remains to be seen, but its existence is already an omen of ill times ahead for all of us.
