Escalation in the Middle East: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Operation Rising Lion — which struck Iran and killed several nuclear scientists — “will continue as long as necessary to eliminate the existential threat we face.” He described it as a “decisive moment” for Israel, warning that Iran still possesses significant capabilities to strike back.
According to Israeli sources, more than 300 airstrikes have targeted Iranian sites, including nuclear facilities, killing ten prominent scientists and two senior IRGC commanders, Salami and Rashid Bagheri. It is considered one of the heaviest blows dealt to Iran in recent years.
Israel has declared a special state of emergency nationwide, as Iran has responded by launching over 100 drones towards Israeli territory, expected to reach their targets within three to five hours. The IDF said its Air Force is also preparing for possible missile attacks from Iran.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed harsh consequences, saying Israel “has written itself a bitter and painful destiny, which it will certainly face.” Abu al-Fadl Shekarchi, spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces, echoed this warning, stating that Israel “will pay a heavy price.”
Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is closely monitoring the crisis and has convened an urgent video conference with key ministers and national intelligence chiefs. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held an emergency meeting with ambassadors from the affected region to check on the safety of Italian citizens in the Gulf area. Tajani also spoke with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, confirming that initial assessments show no serious radiation issues at Iranian nuclear sites following the Israeli strikes.
