Glimmer of hope in trade relations after call with Von der Leyen U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an extension of the suspension of 50% tariffs on the European Union until July 9.

The move, confirmed in a post on Truth Social before boarding Air Force One, follows what Trump described as a “very cordial phone call” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who had requested more time for negotiations.

“I said yes to the extension,” Trump stated, adding that negotiating teams would meet “quickly” to seek a resolution. Just days earlier, the U.S. president had reiterated his tough stance: “We don’t want T-shirts and sneakers; we want to produce tanks,” defending his protectionist trade policy.

The July 9 deadline had already been indicated during a previous postponement granted in April. Now, despite the confrontational tone, there is a renewed opening for dialogue. “Good phone call with Trump,” von der Leyen wrote, confirming the EU’s intent to accelerate talks. After weeks of tension, a sign of de-escalation.
