Tensions are rising among Western allies regarding support for Ukraine. The United States opposes including “greater support” for Kyiv in the draft G7 declaration, currently under discussion in Canada.

Washington is also reluctant to label the Russian invasion as “illegal,” signaling a possible shift from the hardline stance maintained so far. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has announced that President Putin visited the Russian region of Kursk, which borders Ukraine, and has been the site of clashes in recent weeks.

In the Sumy region, six Ukrainian soldiers were killed and more than ten were injured in a Russian attack on a shooting range. The European Union responds with new sanctions: nearly 200 vessels from the so-called “shadow fleet” are targeted, along with frozen assets and travel bans for Russian officials.

On the diplomatic front, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaks with both the Pope and Ukrainian President Zelensky, proposing – with German support – an “arbitration board” to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv. A call also comes from Brussels: “The transatlantic bond must be restored,” emphasizes Italian President Sergio Mattarella, stressing the urgency of cohesive Western action.
