Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for the Middle East under the Trump administration, arrived in St. Petersburg today to discuss peace negotiations in Ukraine with Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriev and, later, with President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin has stated that among the topics under discussion could be the possibility of a bilateral Trump-Putin meeting.

Witkoff, one of the President's key advisors, has played a central role in the Ukraine peace talks and in efforts to restore diplomatic relations between the United States and Russia, which have been severely strained by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

For the White House, reaching a definitive agreement with Russia to end the war in Ukraine is critical. The Trump administration is reportedly aiming for a peace deal by the end of April. According to sources cited by Axios, the U.S. may impose new sanctions on Russia if the Kremlin refuses to accept a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is set to send a £450 million aid package to Ukraine, to be announced at a meeting in Brussels next Friday. According to the Daily Telegraph, the British government may also consider stationing its troops in Ukraine for up to five years, acting as a deterrent until the country is fully remilitarized.
