The meeting of the ministers responsible for foreign trade in Luxembourg has just concluded, where representatives from various European countries sought to reach a common understanding that would allow Europe to respond unitedly to the tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
From the meeting, it emerges that European countries will prefer a more cautious approach in order to seek dialogue and discussion with the White House, although there remains the intention to apply new tariffs on U.S. exports to convince Trump to step back. Swedish Foreign Trade Minister Benjamin Dous stated that European counter-tariffs must be well-calculated, precise, and proportionate.
Moreover, Dous emphasized that since Europe, China, and Canada will respond in the coming days with countermeasures
targeting U.S. exports, pressure on the White House will increase exponentially.
The European strategy will seek dialogue with the Trump administration in order to reach a fair and balanced agreement, as the EU has no intention of escalating trade tensions or further destabilizing global financial markets. In this regard, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani highlighted the importance of not including American whiskey among the goods subject to higher tariffs, as this could have even more disastrous consequences for the export of the Italian wine sector to the United States.
