Turkish authorities have arrested Mehmet Pehlivan, Ekrem Imamoglu's lawyer, the mayor of Istanbul who has been detained since Sunday, March 23rd, and could be a leading political opponent of current Turkish President Erdogan. The news of the arrest was made public today via Imamoglu’s X profile — currently managed by his legal team — where he accused the Turkish government of fabricating false pretexts to arrest Pehlivan.
Imamoglu called for the immediate release of his lawyer and stated that the Turkish government is attempting to orchestrate a coup not only against democracy but also against the judicial system. According to the Turkish newspaper "Cumhuriyet", Pehlivan was taken to a police station, but no charges have been formally filed against him.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Journalists’ Union (TGS) reported that two other Turkish reporters have been arrested and are currently in detention. In recent days, Turkish police have arrested nearly 1,900 people, including protesters and journalists, with only 11 reporters released on Thursday. Furthermore, the repressive climate continues, with Turkey's Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) imposing fines on four Turkish broadcasters for airing footage of the arrests.
