Mark Carney, Canada's Prime Minister, announced yesterday during a press conference that there will be a snap election on April 28th. The election was originally scheduled for October 20th, but according to Carney, in such a time of crisis, the government needs a strong and unequivocal mandate.

The election campaign has already begun, especially for Liberals and Conservatives, and it'll last for five weeks, while the threats of annexation from U.S. President Donald Trump continue to grow stronger. In recent weeks, the trade war between U.S. and Canada has significantly strained the relations between the two countries. Moreover, Trump’s statements regarding a possible annexation of Canada have sparked strong nationalist sentiments among Canadian citizens.

Carney was elected leader of the Liberal Party in early March, replacing former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had already resigned in January. In doing so, the Liberals have denied the Conservatives the opportunity to use Trudeau's government failures — such as rising prices — to gain more votes. According to recent polls, what concerns Canadian citizens the most are the possible repercussions of the trade war between the United States and Canada.
