Delegations from Russia and the United States will meet in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday, March 24th, for a bilateral meeting to continue negotiations. Later in the day, the U.S. delegation will meet with Ukrainian officials, which will present a list of energy infrastructures included in the 30-day ceasefire agreed upon by both Ukraine and Russia. However, Europe will be excluded once again from the negotiations.
EU's exclusion from the negotiation table reflects the delicacy of Brussels - Moscow relations. Notably, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov referred to Europe as the “party of war,” accusing European leaders of initiating a militarization process that is completely misaligned with the vision of Russian and U.S. leaders.
However, even between Ukraine and the United States, many questions remain, such as the control of Ukrainian power plants: Trump had stated that, during wednesday's phone call with Zelensky, he discussed U.S. ownership of these energy infrastructures, but the Ukrainian leader denied that such discussion took place. For Zelensky, nuclear power plants are state-owned, although he does not reject the likeliness of accepting U.S. investments aimed at modernizing these facilities.
