The newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace on Monday, March 17th, marking the first overseas diplomatic trip for Carney. He emphasized the need to work with reliable allies, a clear reference to the political and economic tensions between Canada and U.S., specifying that a strong economy is built through collaboration, not confrontation.
Carney aims to strengthen ties between Canada and European allies at a particularly delicate time for the country, which has become a target of the new U.S. tariff policy, to which the Canadian government has already responded with countermeasures. Macron stated that fair trade and respecting international norms, would benefit the prosperity of all states, as opposed to harmful trade policies that contribute to inflation and challenge the global economy. Following the meeting at the Élysée, Carney will also meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III in London.
Carney is not accustomed to politics; he comes from the world of finance, a background that could get particularly useful given economic challenges of the coming months. Additionally, he had already worked with outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the post-pandemic period.
