On Thursday, March 13th, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a 200% tariff would be imposed on wine, champagne, and other European alcoholic products unless the European Commission decides to step back and remove the 50% tariff on U.S. whiskey.

The countermeasures imposed by the European Commission on American products will take effect on April 1, and the CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States – a trade association representing U.S. alcoholic beverage producers – commented that the new tariffs imposed by the EU are "very devastating."

Meanwhile, Trump stated that a 200% tariff imposition could be great for American alcoholic beverage companies, as such high taxation would eliminate a significant portion of the competition.

In the meantime, in Canada, some alcohol retailers have already started removing American bourbon from their shelves, and the BC Liquor Distribution Branch – the government agency responsible for alcohol distribution in the province of British Columbia – has stopped supplying American alcohol products such as beer, wine, and spirits.
