U.S. President Donald Trump is working on a project that involves building metal refining plants at Pentagon military bases, according to a report by Reuters citing two senior officials from the Trump administration. The main goal would be to increase domestic production of critical minerals and reduce the gap with Beijing in this sector.
Trump had already hinted at this project during his "State of the Union Address," in which he mentioned the arrival of a “historic action” for the critical minerals sector.
If this project moves forward, the United States could exponentially increase its independence from Beijing: currently, fighter jets, submarines, ammunition, and other types of weapons are built with minerals processed in China. Additionally, Trump stated that he will appoint a "czar" for critical minerals.
