European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the “Rearm Europe” plan on the morning of Tuesday, March 4th, in Brussels. The plan, previously announced at the London summit, is divided into five major key points and aims to mobilize approximately €800 billion for European defense. Additionally, von der Leyen suggested allowing EU member states to access up to €150 billion in loans to further increase defense spending.

The mail goal is to simplify how European states can increase their defense budgets. Von der Leyen announced that EU member states would be given more incentives if they choose to use cohesion policy programs to boost defense spending.

Furthermore, the European Commission President expressed gratitude towards the United States for its crucial role in recent decades, but emphasized the need for Europe to have greater autonomy and the capacity to ensure its own security.
