About a month after the start of Donald Trump’s second term at the White House, French President Emmanuel Macron is the first European leader to make an official visit to the United States. The two leaders also attended, virtually from Washington, the G7 meeting held in Kiev a few hours earlier and chaired by Canadian President Justin Trudeau. During the subsequent press conference, Trump announced that the United States and Ukraine are currently working together on a mineral agreement.
The meeting with Macron was also judged positively by Trump, who emphasized that the discussion represented an important step toward peace in Ukraine. The talks between the two presidents covered numerous topics, but much of the discussion focused on the negotiations in Ukraine and how to reach a ceasefire. Despite Macron’s efforts to ease recent tensions between the European Union and the United States, European leaders remain concerned about the White House's rapprochement with the Kremlin, signaling how geopolitical balances are shifting rapidly, just a little over a month into Trump’s second term.
The summit also saw a brief diplomatic impasse: while Trump spoke about the European aid sent to Ukraine, claiming that Europe was recovering the invested money, Macron intervened to correct him, specifying that France financed 60% of the total amount using real funds in the form of loans, guarantees, and subsidies. Despite this, Trump responded to reporters in the Oval Office, stating that Europe is indeed recovering its money, while the United States had not done so until that point but is now trying to.
During the visit, Macron expressed the desire of nearly all European leaders to send European troops to Ukraine, with the aim of protecting any peace agreements on the ground, but also emphasized the need for continued American presence on the field. Trump’s recent statements, reopening dialogue with Moscow, have further complicated the relationship between the White House and the European Union. Macron reiterated the importance of presenting a united front in negotiations, actively involving Kiev.
Additionally, Trump spoke positively about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, highlighting the importance of the alliance between Italy and the United States.
