The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, long awaited, has sparked celebrations in Gaza. However, negotiations in Doha have hit a stalemate. Netanyahu accuses Hamas of seeking last-minute concessions, while Hamas points to internal Israeli political tensions, complicating the deal.
Recent developments on the ceasefire agreement
The most recent developments regarding the long-awaited ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas have sparked celebrations in the streets of Gaza. However, the negotiations that started yesterday in Doha, Qatar, have already faced a stalemate.
Why?
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of stepping back on parts of the deal in an attempt to secure last-minute concessions. This has led Netanyahu to delay the cabinet’s vote on the ceasefire agreement.
According to Al Jazeera, Hamas denies backing out of the ceasefire agreement. Instead, they emphasize internal issues within Netanyahu’s coalition government, particularly the Religious Zionist Party, led by Bezalel Smotrich. Smotrich has threatened to leave Netanyahu's coalition if the ceasefire deal is reached, further complicating the situation.
Violence and Casualties amid ceasefire talks
Since the announcement of the latest ceasefire agreement, Israel has launched attacks on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of 73 Palestinians. As of now, the conflict has claimed over 46,000 Palestinian lives and left more than 10,000 wounded since October 7, 2023.
