The incoming President faced trial today and was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records to facilitate payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
An historic event for a US President
Man of records, Trump will be the first former and incoming President to be convicted of criminal charges. After attending the process virtually in New York, Trump has been sentenced to unconditional discharge meaning he will not face prison, probation, fines, or any other penalties.
Mitigated sentence to avoid interference with inauguration
New York state Judge Juan Merchan had already said that unconditional discharge was the only lawful sentence that would not threaten the President's inauguration scheduled for ten days from now, specifically Monday, Jan. 20.
Trump’s lawyers are appealing
Trump stated that, as President-elect, he enjoys immunity from all prosecution and sentencing, but defined the trial a “unAmerican witch hunt” and a Dem’s “pathetic loss”. Despite the sentence, conviction will remain on Trump’s record. His lawyers confirmed they are appealing.
