European stock markets opened the session in negative territory on March 11, amid growing caution in financial markets. Investors remain focused on geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the potential macroeconomic implications linked to energy price trends and upcoming central bank decisions.

In Milan, the FTSE MIB opened down by around 0.7% at about 46,000 points, in line with the weak tone seen across other continental indices. In Paris, the CAC 40 began trading at 8,006 points, down 0.6%, while in Frankfurt the DAX posted a more pronounced decline, falling more than 1% to around 23,670 points. Spain’s market also moved lower, with the IBEX 35 trading around 11,000 points, down roughly 0.8%, while in London the FTSE 100 fell 0.7% to about 10,330 points. The Euro Stoxx 50 was also in negative territory in early trading, losing around 0.8% to stand near 5,780 points.

Investor sentiment is being weighed down mainly by renewed tensions in the Middle East. The military escalation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran is fueling concerns about potential repercussions for strategic energy routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, with immediate effects on oil prices. Rising energy prices have once again brought the risk of renewed inflationary pressures to the forefront, a particularly sensitive issue for the European economy.

The environment therefore remains dominated by uncertainty over the outlook for monetary policy. Some European Central Bank officials have stressed that potential energy shocks could complicate the disinflation process, reigniting the debate over the path of interest rates in the coming months.

Meanwhile, market participants are awaiting key macroeconomic signals from the United States, particularly inflation data, which could provide fresh clues about the Federal Reserve’s next moves and influence the direction of global markets in the coming sessions.
