Sony Group Corp on Monday said it has formed a joint venture with Yanmar Holdings Co Ltd, focused on advancing the development and real-world implementation of underwater sensing technology.
Sony, a Tokyo-based conglomerate, said the JV with the Osaka, Japan-based industrial equipment manufacturer was formed in early September and commenced operations on Wednesday.
The new company, named Yanmar Blue Tech, is 90% owned by Yanmar Holdings.
According to Sony, YBT's first initiative is a research project that aims to enhance and commercialise remotely operated vehicles for underwater surveys and hull-cleaning operations.
"The joint venture combines the two companies' expertise to create new technologies and solutions that address marine sustainability issues such as ecosystem conservation and workforce shortages in underwater infrastructure inspections," Sony said.
Sony will provide image sensors and other technologies, including 3D spatial sensing, to support the project's development.
Eiji Michigami, chief technology officer at Yanmar Holdings, commented: "Our customers have expressed strong interest in advanced ROV technologies, and we believe this collaboration will play an important role in addressing marine challenges. Together, we will contribute to marine environmental conservation and the growth of sustainable industries."
