Deutsche Telekom AG announced Monday that its subsidiary, MMS, is collaborating with Bankhaus Metzler to pilot a project that leverages surplus renewable energy for Bitcoin mining.

Deutsche Telekom launches Bitcoin mining project The project, named "Digital Monetary Photosynthesis," aims to harness unused renewable energy—often lost due to limited storage and grid capacity—to produce valuable data and insights for stabilizing energy grids. Based in Bonn, Germany, Deutsche Telekom highlighted that this project will utilize flexible Bitcoin mining loads, which have the potential to balance energy supply and demand, contributing to grid stability during periods of fluctuating energy availability. The data collected through this initiative could benefit operators of wind and solar power plants by offering a solution for managing surplus energy.

Track record of supporting decentralized protocols

Deutsche Telekom has a track record of supporting decentralized protocols in the Web3 sector since 2020 and began operating a Bitcoin node in 2023. The current pilot project will also involve hosting partner Metis Solutions GmbH, while the bitcoin mining infrastructure itself is housed at RIVA Engineering GmbH’s facility in Backnang, Germany.
