Honda Motor Co. Ltd. announced on Wednesday its second straight month of annual production declines, with exports from Japan also dropping.

The Tokyo-based automaker reported a production total of 298,845 units in September, a 20% decrease from 373,701 units in September 2023. Domestic production in Japan rose slightly by 0.3% to 61,707 units from 61,515 units, marking the first annual increase in two months. However, production outside Japan fell for the second month in a row, down 24% to 237,138 vehicles from 312,186 units the previous year. In North America, where Honda produces the largest share of vehicles outside Japan, production increased by 2.6% to 137,024 units from 133,510 units. In contrast, production in Asia dropped significantly, falling 47% to 91,296 units from 172,135, with a sharp 58% decline in China to 50,425 units from 119,305 units.

But sales rise in Japan

Honda’s sales in Japan rose by 26% in September to 67,982 vehicles, marking the 14th consecutive month of year-over-year growth. New vehicle registrations surged 38% to 35,334 from 25,534. However, Honda reported that exports from Japan fell for the first time in two months, decreasing by 17% to 6,193 units from 7,478 units.
