UK CMA investigates Alphabet-Anthropic relationship

Alphabet, the parent company of Google based in Mountain View, California, is reported to have invested over $2 billion in Anthropic through multiple funding rounds. This trend of significant investments in AI start-ups is becoming increasingly common among major tech companies.

The CMA has set a deadline of December 19 for its phase 1 decision.

In September, the CMA had previously approved Amazon.com Inc's partnership with Anthropic following a phase 1 investigation. The CMA assessed Amazon's arrangements with Anthropic against specific thresholds for turnover and market share, determining that neither was met, thus ruling out the need for a further investigation.
