The Devil sets theaters ablaze: nearly 3 Million at the Italian box office

The Devil Wears Prada 2 tops the Italian box office, grossing over €2.7 million on its opening day, surpassing the debuts of Michael and Barbie.

Miranda & Co. twenty years later

While audiences in cinemas - and beyond - are still dancing and singing nonstop to the music and choreography of Michael, yesterday, Wednesday, April 29, the big screen began to heat up with the new and highly anticipated sequel to a film that has since become a generational cult classic: The Devil Wears Prada 2, once again directed by David Frankel. The film sees the return of the iconic quartet: Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci. That alone is explosive news—but let’s take a closer look.

Runway beats the King of Pop and even Barbie

With millions of fans eagerly waiting, The Devil Wears Prada 2 debuted with an explosive gross: €2,707,615. To put this into perspective, the first film opened twenty years ago with €488,938, making it clear just how fiery the start of this new journey into the eclectic world of Runway has been. Overall, the 2006 film grossed €14,313,005, so the possibility of surpassing that milestone is already in sight.

With this opening, Meryl Streep and her team secure the best first day of 2026, comfortably surpassing the current major rival Michael (€1,099,269) and even the 2023 cultural phenomenon Barbie (€2,160,957). The debut also came close to Inside Out 2 (2024), which opened with €3,011,118. Yesterday’s Italian box office podium therefore looks like this:

  1. The Devil Wears Prada 2 with €2,707,615;
  2. Michael, holding strong with €582,408;
  3. Lee Cronin – The Mummy, earning €22,987.

The race has officially begun. The cultural phenomenon is now unfolding on two fronts: on one side, the immortal icon of Michael Jackson; on the other, the dazzling world of luxury led by Miranda & Co. Who will come out on top at the box office?

The world of magazines is about to implode

The second chapter picks up with Miranda Priestly, once again at the helm of Runway magazine. But a crisis is unfolding, an uncontrollable, public, viral explosion. Nigel (Stanley Tucci) tries to stop it, but to no avail. This is where Andy (Anne Hathaway) comes back into play, now more essential than ever if Runway is to survive.

Miranda remains the central force driving the film, but something has changed. She has had to adapt, to moderate, to restrain herself. The devil who once refused any limits has now learned to live with the reality in front of her. No more flashy offices, no more private jets, goodbye luxury cars.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 unfolds in a world of magazines in crisis, where the central conflict is between Miranda and Emily (Emily Blunt), the former frantic assistant who has become an executive in a French luxury group. The one who was just an assistant in 2006 now controls advertising contracts: Miranda risks going under; Emily holds the power to save or sink Runway.
