A requiem for the dead. A success for the living
The ninth chapter in the Resident Evil series, released on February 27, 2026, and sequel to the equally successful Resident Evil Village (2021), continues to rack up successes—alongside zombies. The title marks the return of Leon S. Kennedy, one of the most iconic and beloved characters in the entire saga, and also features FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft as a protagonist.
Requiem proved to be an immediate success with both audiences and critics:
- On Metacritic it holds an average score of around 90 out of 100
- On OpenCritic it received a 95% recommendation rate
- On Eurogamer it earned a full 5 out of 5 stars
- On IGN it scored 9 out of 10
As if that weren’t enough, the game sold 5 million copies within just five days of release, breaking the record for the fastest-selling title in the entire Resident Evil series. And that’s not all—on Steam it set another record as the best-performing entry in the franchise, with over 344,000 concurrent players during launch weekend.
PlayStation leads in revenue and surpasses Steam
To date, Resident Evil Requiem has reached 6 million copies sold, confirming itself as an unstoppable success for Capcom. However, the most striking data concerns how sales are distributed across platforms: it is not Steam leading in revenue, but Sony’s latest console, the PlayStation 5.
According to a report, PS5 appears to be the platform that generated the highest revenue for the ninth chapter of the saga, exceeding 200 million dollars in earnings. This is both significant and curious, as the number of units sold is reportedly higher on Steam: PC moved more copies, but PlayStation 5 generated greater overall revenue.
Alinea Analytics released a report stating that Requiem, on PS5 alone, is approaching 3 million copies sold, making it the most successful video game on the platform for the month of March. As for PC, as mentioned, it records higher volumes but lower revenue, totaling less than 167 million dollars.
The console market is (not) dead
The case of Resident Evil Requiem highlights an important factor: despite what some may say, the console market is far from dead, at least when it comes to Sony’s platform. Moreover, with this latest chapter, Capcom proves itself to be a solid ecosystem, capable of maintaining very high quality standards over time for a series that has made history and become a symbol for a generation of gamers, and beyond.
Requiem is already considered among the best Resident Evil titles of recent years; and what it is achieving in the gaming world cannot go unnoticed. The decline of the console market remains an open debate, and despite Sony having increased the price of the PlayStation 5, the console continues to play a central role in the gaming market.
