Spain jobless total is lowest for month of January since 2008

The number of people registered as unemployed in Spain rose by 30,392 in January from December, reaching 2.44 million, the Ministry of Labour said Tuesday.


It was the lowest figure for January since 2008, when joblessness had stood at 2.26 million people.


Back in January 2025, it was 2.60 million. Unemployment has since fallen by 6.2%, or 160,381 people. In January 2025, unemployment had decreased by 6.1% on-year, or 168,417 people.


The monthly increase of 30,392 in January 2026 is equivalent to a 1.3% rise, with a 1.8% increase in female unemployment and a 0.5% uptick in male unemployment.


After seasonal adjustment, registered unemployment fell by 25,402 monthly in January, compared to 33,055 in January 2025.


Notably, the total number of unemployed people under the age of 25 was 180,892 in January. It was down by 4.0% on-year from 188,364.
