U.S. lawmakers and former officials criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to allow Nvidia to sell advanced H200 AI chips to China, warning it could weaken America’s technological edge and boost Beijing’s military capabilities.

The administration approved the sales under new rules requiring third-party testing, limits on shipment volumes, and assurances that the chips will not be used for military purposes. Critics argue the safeguards are difficult to enforce and rely heavily on trust in Chinese buyers.

Former Trump Asia adviser Matt Pottinger called the move a mistake that could “supercharge” China’s military modernization. Democratic lawmakers were more direct, accusing the administration of giving up a strategic advantage.

Nvidia defended the decision, saying U.S. companies should be allowed to compete globally in approved commercial markets. The White House has not commented.
