Thousands of airline workers across Italy have launched a four-hour national strike today, disrupting operations at major airports and affecting travelers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The strike, taking place on December 17, 2025, from 1 PM to 5 PM, impacts airports in Rome and Catania and involves pilots and cabin crew from Vueling, easyJet, ITA Airways, as well as ground staff from Air France, KLM, ENAV, TECHNO SKY, and other handling companies affiliated with Assohandlers.

Workers are protesting for better wages, improved working conditions, and more stable schedules amid growing pressure from airlines and increased operational demands. They also demand enhanced safety measures and better recognition of their labor rights.

ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority, has confirmed that key domestic and international flights will continue to operate, including routes to New York, Dubai, Bangkok, and Cairo. All flights already in progress at the start of the strike, as well as delayed flights due to operational reasons, are guaranteed to reach their destinations. Passengers are advised to check their flight status in advance and prepare for potential delays.

The strike has also affected financial markets, with shares of the airlines involved, including ITA Airways, easyJet, and Vueling, falling on average 1.5% in morning trading as investors reacted to potential disruptions. Analysts note that repeated strikes could influence travel demand and increase operational costs for airlines.

The protest highlights ongoing tensions between airline management and staff as the sector adapts to post-pandemic demand and operational challenges, coming at a time when the Italian travel industry is experiencing high passenger volumes during the holiday season.
