Amazon.com Inc is in discussions to invest around $10 billion in ChatGPT creator OpenAI, potentially valuing the artificial intelligence company at more than $500 billion, a source familiar with the matter said. The talks are described as “very fluid.”
The potential deal highlights the ongoing demand for AI computing power as companies race to build systems rivaling human intelligence. OpenAI has already signed multibillion-dollar AI deals with firms like Nvidia and Oracle, and a $38-billion cloud services agreement with Amazon in November.
OpenAI, Amazon, and Microsoft have not commented. The investment could also involve OpenAI’s Trainium chips, which compete with Nvidia and Google, and may be part of a broader fundraising round. OpenAI is also exploring an enterprise version of ChatGPT for Amazon, though details on possible integration with Amazon’s shopping features are unclear.
The discussions come as OpenAI prepares for a potential initial public offering that could value the company at up to $1 trillion.
