Italian unions representing security personnel expressed frustration after the government deferred any discussion of additional funding, leaving the 2026 budget stalled in the Senate.
A meeting between government officials and unions ended without agreements, as ministers emphasized that no extra resources would be allocated until the European Commission’s infringement procedure concludes. Unions criticized the decision, demanding more support for pensions, overtime, and workforce renewal, calling out what they see as mere “words of appreciation” instead of concrete measures.
Meanwhile, the 2026 budget remains in limbo in the Senate commission, awaiting amendments, government opinions, and parliamentary review. Key issues include coverage for planned expenditures and the controversial proposal on Bank of Italy gold reserves, which Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti will discuss with ECB President Christine Lagarde at the upcoming Eurogroup meeting.
Union leaders warned that the current approach leaves the security sector marginalized. With the legislative process still uncertain, some predict that the budget may not reach the Chamber of Deputies until after Christmas, as ongoing negotiations attempt to balance parliamentary demands and ministerial priorities.
