Japanese consumer confidence exceeds expectations in November

Japan's consumer confidence improved in November, topping consensus forecast, official data showed Tuesday.


The November index, released by the Cabinet Office, saw an increase of 1.7 points in November to 37.5 points, up from 35.8 points in October on a seasonally adjusted basis.


It surpassed the FXStreet-cited consensus forecast of 35.9 points.


Out of the four sub-indices, the biggest move was a jump of 2.0 points in the willingness to buy durable goods, which came in at 30.9 points for November.


Employment sub-index displayed the highest consumer confidence which was up 1.6 points to 41.7 points from the previous month.


Meanwhile, overall livelihood recorded 36.2 points and income growth at 41.0 points.


Regarding price expectations for the year ahead, 90.6% of the surveyed group expect prices to go up, a decrease of 2.0% from October.


The index was compiled from a survey conducted on November 15 which covered 8,400 households.
