Japan's current account surplus surged way ahead of expectations in September, preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance showed Tuesday.

According to preliminary balance of payments figures, the country's current account surplus more than doubled year-on-year in September to JPY4.483 trillion, approximately USD29.07 billion, from JPY1.537 a year earlier.

The figures beat the FXStreet-cited consensus forecast of a JPY2.468 trillion surplus.

Month-on-month, the current account surplus rose 21% from JPY3.701 trillion in August.
