Lufthansa exceeded profit forecasts in the third quarter despite weaker demand for transatlantic travel between Europe and North America. The company reaffirmed its optimistic outlook for 2025, focusing on premium segment growth, efficiency improvements and fleet renewal.

Lufthansa reported an operating profit of €1.33 billion for the third quarter — slightly above analysts’ expectations of €1.32 billion — despite lower demand on North Atlantic routes. The figure was 1% lower than a year earlier, but the carrier described the weakness in transatlantic bookings as temporary and expects demand to rebound in the fourth quarter. Shares rose more than 5% following the results announcement.

Management confirmed its 2025 guidance, aiming for operating profit above last year's €1.6 billion. The group is prioritising a cost-cutting and operational centralisation programme to simplify its complex multi-hub structure. Strong demand in Latin America and growth in premium bookings helped offset softer performance in the North American market.

One of the main obstacles to restoring profitability remains delays in aircraft deliveries, particularly the Boeing 777X, forcing Lufthansa to continue operating less fuel-efficient aircraft. The airline expects to receive twice as many long-haul aircraft in 2026 as this year and to continue reducing fleet size. Meanwhile, negotiations with labour unions continue in an effort to avoid potential strikes during the transformation programme.
