Japan's current account surplus came in ahead of expectations in August, data from the Ministry of Finance showed Wednesday.

According to preliminary balance of payments figures, the country's current account surplus declined 4.8% year-on-year in August to JPY3.776 trillion, or USD24.76 billion, from JPY3.966 trillion a year prior.

The latest figure surpassed the FXStreet-cited consensus forecast of a JPY3.540 trillion surplus.

Meanwhile, the current account surplus increased 41% month-on-month in August from JPY2.684 trillion in July.
