The end of summer holidays brings with it a financial burden for Italian households, with Codacons estimating an average €416 in additional expenses per family between September and December compared to the same period in 2024. Rising prices across essential goods and services are driving what the association calls a true “autumn sting.”

  1. Food: A family with two children will face an extra €130 just for groceries and beverages, excluding Christmas spending.

  1. Back-to-school costs: Stationery and school supplies are up +5%, while textbooks rise +3.8%, adding about €50 per family.

  1. Transport: Higher travel costs will weigh in at an additional €66 for a four-member household.

  1. Energy bills: With gas demand rising ahead of winter, energy tariffs could increase by +15%, pushing up costs by around €170.

Codacons also cautioned that the impact could worsen if U.S. tariffs and global geopolitical tensions further pressure Italy’s economy and consumer prices.
