The Euro Area current account recorded a €32 billion surplus in May 2025, up €13 billion from the previous month, according to data from the European Central Bank (ECB). Analysts had expected a reading of around €35 billion.
The surplus reflected positive balances in goods (€33 billion), services (€13 billion) and primary income (€2 billion), partly offset by a deficit in secondary income (€16 billion).
In the 12 months to May 2025, the current account posted a €333 billion surplus, equal to 2.1% of euro area GDP, compared with a €364 billion surplus (2.5% of GDP) in the previous year.
