US-EU tariff negotiations continue, with former President Donald Trump signaling a more conciliatory stance—at least in words. In a phone interview with Real America's Voice, Trump said a trade deal with India is “very close to being finalized.” As for the European Union, which he described as having been “brutal to us,” he added, “we might reach an agreement.” Regarding Canada, however, “it’s too early to say.”

On the European side, Tommaso Foti, Italy’s Minister for European Affairs and the PNRR, called for a calm, measured approach. Speaking to La Repubblica, Foti warned against overreacting to the possibility of 30% tariffs: “If that really happens, the table collapses. But now is not the time for strongman tactics.”

Foti emphasized the complexity of the situation, citing the dollar’s devaluation, energy costs, and the urgent need to streamline EU regulations. “We need to avoid a panic effect, which could lead to serious consequences. We must stay calm and find a balance.”

When asked whether a 10% tariff compromise might be acceptable, Foti declined to give figures: “I won’t talk numbers—it’s too risky. But Trump’s letter, although framed as ‘informative,’ suggests openness to negotiation.”

In a separate interview with Corriere della Sera, Foti reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to diplomacy: “No reckless moves. No frenzy. This is the time for negotiations, not impulsive reactions. We will negotiate to the very end, and the EU has followed this path with us.”

Should talks fail, Foti assured that “Europe has a clear strategy and is ready. Multi-level responses have already been considered.”
