The U.S. private sector lost 33,000 jobs in June 2025, defying analyst expectations of a 99,000 gain, according to the latest ADP National Employment Report. The figure marks a sharp reversal from May’s upwardly revised 29,000 gain (initially reported as +37,000).
The services sector drove the decline with a loss of 66,000 jobs, particularly in professional and business services (-56,000) and education and health services (-52,000). In contrast, manufacturing added 15,000 jobs and construction rose by 9,000.
By company size:
- Small businesses lost 47,000 jobs
- Medium-sized firms shed 15,000
- Large enterprises added 30,000 positions
“While layoffs remain uncommon, employers’ hesitation to hire or replace departing workers led to job losses last month,” said ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson. “However, slower hiring hasn’t yet weighed on wage growth.”
The report precedes the official U.S. Labor Department data, due tomorrow, July 3.
