"A strong Europe in a changing world" is the motto of Denmark’s rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, which kicks off today following six months under Poland’s leadership.

Copenhagen, led by a coalition government under Social Democrat Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, has outlined three key priorities for the semester: strengthening security — both military and economic — tightening migration policies, and boosting European competitiveness.

One of the most closely watched dossiers during the Danish presidency will be trade relations with the United States. Talks on transatlantic tariffs may reach a breakthrough within the first month of Denmark’s term.

Support for Ukraine is also expected to remain a central theme throughout the semester, both in political and financial terms.

On the competitiveness front, Denmark aims to advance two longstanding goals also championed by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: cutting red tape and completing the single market.

“A warm welcome to Denmark as it takes over the EU Council presidency. I look forward to working together for a secure and competitive Europe. With Danish pragmatism and leadership, Europe is in good hands,” von der Leyen posted on X.

Similar messages of support came from European Council President António Costa and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
