The manufacturing sector remains a cornerstone of Italy’s economy and a fertile ground for innovative startups. According to the latest data from Unioncamere and the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (June 2024), 12.9% of Italy’s nearly 15,000 innovative startups operate in manufacturing, while around 80% are active in business services, mainly software development (44.2%) and R&D (14.6%).
This underscores the sector’s growing appeal to young entrepreneurs and investors, and highlights how collaboration between startups and established industry players is key to accelerating innovation and digital transformation across production chains.
From 4 to 6 March 2026, BolognaFiere will host the 24th edition of MECSPE, Italy’s leading trade show for the manufacturing industry, reaffirming its role as a key meeting point for industry players and the wider innovation ecosystem.
Within this framework, the Start Up Factory will return for its sixth edition — an event designed to foster dialogue and collaboration between innovative startups and established companies. The initiative aims to connect high-tech startups with industry leaders to promote knowledge exchange, test new business models, and introduce enabling technologies into production processes.
Past editions have showcased dozens of high-tech startups working in fields from AI and robotics to industrial automation and cybersecurity, demonstrating the vitality of Italy’s innovation landscape.
Unioncamere data confirms the strength and resilience of the Italian startup ecosystem, with the number of innovative startups registered exceeding 15,000, alongside a steady rise in innovative SMEs. In this scenario, manufacturing stands out not only as a key adopter of advanced digital solutions but also as a strategic sector for Italy’s future competitiveness.
At MECSPE 2026, the Start Up Factory will once again take centre stage, offering a platform for young businesses to present cutting-edge solutions for manufacturing. The area will host events, round tables and networking sessions to connect startups, investors, established firms and innovation stakeholders.
"The Industrio Ventures team is proud to support Start Up Factory once again, involving top experts in key strategic areas like microelectronics, robotics, material testing and cybersecurity, while giving voice to early-stage startups and science-based spin-offs," said Gabriele Paglialonga, General Manager of Industrio Ventures, an industrial startup accelerator and investor coordinating the initiative.
"MECSPE has always been attentive to innovation and industrial transformation.
We’re proud to showcase startups, which drive technological growth and change in our country. Start Up Factory has become an essential meeting point between fresh ideas and established businesses, and a decisive lever for the competitiveness of Italy’s manufacturing sector," added Maruska Sabato, MECSPE Project Manager.
Meanwhile, MECSPE’s focus on manufacturing innovation will continue with the third edition of MECSPE Bari, scheduled for 27–29 November 2025 at the Fiera del Levante, offering a new opportunity for companies and professionals from Central and Southern Italy to connect and collaborate.
