U.S. President Donald Trump said he is prepared to extend the July 8 deadline for completing trade talks before higher tariffs take effect, though he does not believe an extension will be necessary.

Speaking to the press, Trump announced plans to send formal letters to trade partners within one to two weeks, notifying them of new, unilaterally imposed tariffs ahead of the July 9 deadline for reintroducing higher duties on multiple countries.

“In about a week and a half or two, we’ll send letters to countries outlining the deal,” Trump said, according to international media reports.
