Italy: industrial revenue down, slight growth in services

In March 2025, Italy’s industrial turnover declined by 1.6% month-on-month in value and 1.0% in volume, according to Istat. Domestic sales fell 1.3% (-0.4% in volume) and foreign sales dropped 2.1% (-1.9% in volume). In contrast, the services sector posted a 0.7% rise in both value and volume, driven by wholesale trade (+0.9% in value, +0.8% in volume) and other services (+0.5% in value, +0.7% in volume).

Among major industrial groupings, only consumer goods recorded a monthly increase (+1.0%), while energy plunged 12.2%, capital goods slipped 2.8%, and intermediate goods declined 0.7%. In Q1 2025, industrial turnover rose 1.5% in value and 1.2% in volume. Services grew 0.3% in value, with volumes flat.

Year-on-year, industrial turnover in March decreased 1.1% in both value and volume. Declines were seen domestically (-1.1% in value, -1.3% in volume) and abroad (-1.4% in value, -0.6% in volume). Only consumer goods showed annual growth (+2.6%), while energy tumbled 13.4%.

In services, annual turnover grew by 1.3% in value and 0.1% in volume. Wholesale trade rose 0.7% in value but fell slightly in volume (-0.1%), while other services increased in both value (+2.0%) and volume (+0.2%).
